New Sister City In Thailand To Boost Gold Coast Dive Industry

The Gold Coast is getting a new Sister City!

Mayor Tom Tate put pen to paper on Monday, while over in Thailand on a trade mission, signing documents promising to build the relationship between the Glitter Strip and Phuket.

Cr Tate said becoming Sister Cities with the tourist hotspot would help get a proposed artificial dive precinct off The Spit up and running.

“Phuket has a very well established recreational dive industry and we want to capitalise on that,” he said.

Mayor Tate said the coastal cities have a lot in common, and that a formal Sister Cities relationship would also allow the Gold Coast to share its life saving and beach cleaning knowledge with Phuket.

“Beaches are their lifeblood for tourism, much the same as ours so beach cleanliness is coming to the fore as a real issue,” said Mayor Tate.

“I’m also keen to establish a lifeguard exchange, similar to what we have achieved with Japan.”

The official process of becoming Sister Cities could take up to three years to finalise.
