Buses will be replacing trains on nine lines across the rail network tonight after a power surge damaged power equipment near Flinders Street station.
The lines will close in sections from 10pm tonight.
Alamein, Belgrave, Cranbourne, Glen Waverley, Hurstbridge, Lilydale, Pakenham, Sandringham, South Morang and the City Loop will all be impacted by the closures in some manner.
Metro Trains says commutes may take an hour longer than usual.
Some trains will still run through Richmond and Jolimont after the cricket at the MCG finishes.
Normal service is expected to resume at first train tomorrow morning.
