Real-time Travel Estimates Keep Drivers In The Loop

Ever wished you could tell how long the traffic crawl would last, in case you needed to get off the freeway and take the back roads home?

Well, now we can plan our freeway journey a lot better, with new travel time estimates to be displayed on selected electronic signs during peak hour.

The time estimates are calculated using existing in-road vehicle detection sensors and a new smart technology system.

Every few minutes, the system uses an algorithm that considers distances and current average travel speeds to estimate travel times, which are then published on the overhead electronic freeway signs in real-time.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said displaying travel times will reduce driver frustration by providing motorists with a quick understanding of the current road conditions ahead and giving them an estimated time of arrival to key freeway exits.

"They are also able to make more informed en route travel choices by being able to change their journey based on the displayed travel times that can be used as a guide'" she said.

Main Roads WA has released a map of the electronic signs which will now be feeding us that extra info.

In more technology news,

FINALLY, Apple Maps has updated to include public transit times and directions for Perth and WA commuters.

Transperth buses and trains routes now extend to suburbs like Mandurah and Rockingham, and long distance Transwa train routes are also supported between several Western Australia destinations.

It’s the little things that can make all the difference on your daily commute.
