A Merbein man who attacked a furniture rental business owner 2 years ago over an unpaid bill dispute has been sentenced to 3 and a half years jail.

The court heard after the man was punched repeatedly, Justin Button hit the victim over the head with a cricket bat, the attack causing serious and long term facial injuries.

With a busy weekend expected on Victorian roads the TAC are letting local drivers know they'll be out and about to help everyone get home safely.

They'll spread across 11 locations giving out free breath tests to those celebrating at festivals and events. In Mildura we'll see a team at Sunday's Mildura Cup allowing locals to test their limit before driving home.

Victoria Police say they'll also have a strong presence on the road over the next three days, targeting speed and drink and drug driving.

TAC Senior Road Safety Manager, Samantha Cockfield, says that we all need to plan ahead this weekend to ensure ourselves and loved ones get home safely.


New laws introduced to Parliament this week will place a blanket ban on synthetic drugs being sold in Sunraysia.

Right now, synthetic drugs are sold in retail outlets over the counter as "legal highs" and the only way to outlaw them is categorise them as chemical cocktails when discovered by authorities which is a painstaking process.

The State Government's also looking to reduce the amount of ice people can carry before being considered dealers slashing the trafficable amount of pure methyl amphetamine from 100g to 50g.


Blood donors are needed at the Mildura Blood Donor Centre this coming Labour Day long weekend as regular donors plan to take holidays over this period.

The Red Cross need an extra 25 blood donors to help out between 7.30 and 1pm to help curb a shortage of blood components used mainly by cancer patients.

Red Cross Blood Service Mildura spokesperson, Tracey Ellis, says that it only takes an hour and each donation will help save three lives going to those in need like cancer patients, road trauma victims and burns victims.


Two of the country's highest regarded trainers will go head to head in the Mildura Cup this weekend.

Punters will head to the Mildura Racecourse on Sunday to catch a glimpse of the action.
