Boyd Cordner Announced As Replacement Kangaroos Captain In New Zealand And Tonga AAP

Sydney Roosters’ and Blues captain Boyd Cordner will replace Greg Inglis for Australia’s next two Test matches.

Cordner will step in as skipper for the October matches against New Zealand and Tonga, with Dane Gagai also added to the squad.

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga confirmed the news not long after Greg Inglis was suspended for drink driving and speeding charges.

“Both Boyd and Greg were strong candidates for the captaincy so clearly Boyd was next in line,” Meninga said.

“Boyd has had exceptional success as a leader this season.

"He skippered New South Wales to a State of Origin series victory and also captained Sydney Roosters to a Premiership.

“Being able to captain the Kangaroos will cap a great year for him.”

The appointment makes Cordner the first Roosters player to captain the Australian side since Brad Fittler in 2001, and the first NSW captain since Danny Buderus in 2005.
