7 Legendary Local Aussie Sports Clubs

Aussie sport would be nothing without the grass roots clubs that nurtured the talent of the kids in their communities and fostered a lifelong love of the game.

So, as part of Local Sports Stars, a search for the next generation of Australian sporting talent (details below and enter here), we’ve picked out the most legendary clubs going to give them a shout out as the type of clubs who deserve their awards and recognition as Local Legends. Keep up the great work!

Le Ray Gymnastics at Abbotsleigh

No less than three level 10 girls from LRG at Abbotsleigh made it to nationals as a result of their outstanding performance at the NSW Senior State Championships. The awards and accolades are coming in thick and fast for the club, surely one of the country’s very best centres for Rhythmic Gymnastic excellence.

Parramatta Girls Touch Football Club

Nominated in the Junior Sports Star Team category of the NSW Clubs awards for the sheer determination, drive, and commitment displayed by their young girls in securing back-to-back state championships. An inspiring bunch set to go far in their sport.

Knox Grammar School Swim Team

The Associated Schools of NSW Championships was a procession for Knox Grammar School, who bagged a stunning 43 out of 73 races, smashing 12 records on their way. It was a similar story in the same event in 2017, for what must surely be one of Australia’s most high achieving sports clubs of any discipline.

Cumberland Nepean Softball Association Under-11s

The girls went undefeated through the NSW state championships over the Easter long weekend to secure a historic win for their club. They couldn’t have responded better to playing under the pressure of playing in front of a huge, loud crowd on the Olympic Diamond at Blacktown International Sportspark. A bright future awaits!

Wests Illawarra

Winner of the 2015 AND 2016 Clubs & Community Awards for supporting junior sport and enhancing healthy lifestyle for the people of Illawarra, this is the perfect example of a true community club. In 2015, the club supported no less than 15 sporting groups, directly helping around 2,400 participants with new equipment, ground hire and coaching for participants. They have also given generously to Illawarra Public School and children with disabilities across high schools in NSW.

Bankstown Sports Club

Not only a winner of awards for their own success, Bankstown Sports Club have an annual Service To Sport Medal and Awards Night, to honour their volunteers and community, recognizing the people and teams who have made a real difference to Bankstown over the previous 12 months. Receiving a Banskstown Spirit Of Sport Medal is a highly prestigious honour, a fitting reward that reflects well on winners, their clubs, and their local community.

Wyong Rugby League Club Group

Their tagline “For Friends…and the outdoors” says most of what you need to know about WRLC, a warm, welcoming and active club with an engaged, vibrant membership who love league and love friendship even more. The food and entertainment side of the club is universally popular, and in the Roos and the Junior Roos, they have an awesome sporting side for family members of all ages.
